Final Fridays at Essential Goods : Stephan Anderson-Story | Memoir

Please join us Friday, October 25th at the opening reception for photographer Stephan Anderson-Story's show, Memoir. It will be a great evening and we'd love to see you!

“The images included in Memoir serve as a partial collection of people I have come in contact with that are important to me. Photography allows me to simultaneously show the story of my moments with them and their moments with me. In those moments, we share life together.”

In 1980, Stephan Anderson-Story’s parents built a house on land outside of Baldwin City, Kansas. One year later he was born there. When he visits his home, he walks in the woods and across the nearby fields, reflecting on everyone and everything that has led him to be how he is. It is where he goes to find himself.

We are very excited about this month's Final Fridays downtown on July 26th at Essential Goods and would love for you to join us! We are addicted to Jeannette Bryant of Another Girl's work and love the wit and whimsy of each piece. Below is a mere sampling of what we will have at Essential Goods this Friday. We will be participating in Final Fridays with our next door neighbor Blue Dot Salon this month, and we will have live music by DJ On.It (Sean Foust). It should be an excellent evening and we hope to see you this Friday!

:: Artist Bio ::

Our artist of of the month, Jeannette Ewbank-Bryant of Another Girl, is a life-long Kansan. She was born and raised in Hutchinson but while attending the University of Kansas fell completely in love with Lawrence. After teaching in Holton for three years, she returned to Lawrence and taught high school English and Journalism at Eudora High, retiring in 2010 following a three plus decade career in education.

While imparting knowledge to her students, Jeannette was also picking up serious computer skills of her own. Upon retiring, she began honing those skills and using them in newly creative ways. Utilizing ephemera, decorative papers, glue, found items, glitter, googley eyes and various crafting tools, she began fashioning pins for family and friends. Her unique and witty work was discovered by others and she was encouraged to create items for retail sale.

Much of Jeannette's artwork is designed on the computer and then enhanced and transferred to mat board or wood. Her creations include jewelry, plaques, ornaments, and collages (She also designs party and wedding invitations, birth announcements, and stationary).

Aided by her apparently limitless imagination, one of Jeannette's favorite pastimes is photoshopping animal heads onto human bodies (because she can!). And why not? One might describe her work as whimsical or bizarre --your call.

Jeannette is a popular participant in Lawrence's annual Bizarre Bazaar; her work is also featured at Stitch On in Lawrence, Junque Drawer Boutique in Olathe, and Brandywine River Antiques Market in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania.

Jeannette lives in Lawrence with her husband Joe and is very proud of her daughter Chelsea who is currently completing her internship in mortuary science.

Lis Niswonger

We are excited to welcome local artist Lis Niswonger to Essential Goods! She offers a variety of hand-knitted and crocheted goods perfect for gift giving. Lis taught herself how to knit in college. The first thing she made was argyle socks for her boyfriend. She taught herself how to crochet while on bed rest with her fourth child and counted cross stitch later on. Since then, she seems to always have some sort of needle or hook in her hands and loves trying different projects.

We love the knitted washcloths that pair perfectly with Nurture Botanicals handcrafted soaps that we carry in Essential Goods. We carry a variety of sweet baby and children's crocheted hats, as well as vests that we really dig. We look forward to a variety of more vests arriving shortly as well!

Hoop Mamas

We are thrilled to welcome Hoop Mamas to Essential Goods... just in time for the gorgeous summer (hooping) weather that has just arrived! We were excited to see local business Hoop Mamas at our local LOLA show this spring and knew we wanted to bring them into Essential Goods.

Ali, founder, started Hoop Mamas in 2007 after she bought her first hoop and was instantly hooked. Not only did she enjoy hooping immensely, but she also lost over 30 pounds in a short four months due to hooping. Since that day, she has been making hoops and teaching as a HoopGirl Certified Instructor.

Hoop Mamas hoops are made with poly tubing standard in the hoopdance industry and are jazzed up by hand using a variety of decorative tapes, grip tapes and fabrics. Hoop Mamas is passionate about creating the highest quality hoops around and have vowed to make their hoops affordable so that everyone can experience the benefits of hooping.

Hoop Mamas was voted the second best hoop company in 2012. In addition to finding a variety of hoops for children and adults, Essential Goods also carries travel hoops made in two different collapsable styles - perfect for traveling.

MATT WOODARD :: ORIGINAL WORKS :: Final Fridays at Essential Goods

Opening reception Final Friday May 31st | 5 to 9 PM

Please join us for the opening reception for Matt Woodard on Friday, May 31st from 5 to 9 pm for Final Fridays in Downtown Lawrence. Essential Goods will be participating with their next door neighbor, Blue Dot Salon, for Final Fridays this month and will have live music by DJ (Sean Foust), so it will be a great evening!

About The Artist:
Matt is a local artist who was born, raised, lives and works in Lawrence. His art has been in hiding for some time, finally begging and pleading its way out of the cellar and onto the open wall spaces of Essential Goods. The bold lines and bright colors will grab your attention and the images run a full range of human emotion. They are mental snapshots from daily life now committed to canvas. The works for the show will all be originals. Thankfully, the old will be accompanied by new works and they won’t break the bank. They are reasonably priced to allow and encourage those who normally can’t afford the larger works to take one home with them... hopefully spreading the good word and these unique pieces around the area for more to see and enjoy. Out with the old/in with the new.

We hope to see you next Friday!
